A few weeks ago, I started to write about the businesses housed within the pink building. Some other events interrupted, but now let me continue…

Our Home Study Center is really the business that started it all. As in most of Asia, people in Thailand want to learn English. It has become the international language for business, so to be really successful in the international scene, you have to learn it. As Our Home Chapel was beginning, one of the best ways to meet people to build relationships with (and to earn money to subsidize the church’s ministry) was by opening an English school.

This is what I specifically came to Bangkok to help out with. Having experience from my stint in Korea, plus all that subbing in Fort Wayne, made teaching English a skill I could use to serve God here. Currently I’m teaching 8 classes, mostly children and adults, although I now have a teens writing class. Each class is taught once a week for 90 minutes, either in the evening or on Saturday. Each term is 7 weeks long and throughout the year we have 6 terms. Much of the curriculum is the same as what I used in Korea, which was nice as I got accustomed to teaching here.

The school has several goals: First, to pay bills for the church building. Second, to save extra money to help support other ministries as they get started. Third, to build relationships with students and parents as they interact with the staff. A few of those saved at English camp were students from Our Home Study Center.

Please pray for Our Home Study Center. We recently announced a price increase beginning in January, and the students seem to be rebelling… our enrollment has drastically dropped. Without enough students we don’t have the extra money to support ministries as we’d like to. Pray that we will draw more students to study with us.
