Food Friday: “No, Thanks.”
Posted on 16. Oct, 2009 by April in Thailand, food
We have introduced you to many tasty morsels that you can find here in Thailand (and there are many more to come). However, there are also many foods in Thailand that I don’t think you’ll see at your local Thai restaurant because they don’t generally appeal to American taste-buds. In fact, there are so many bizarre foods in Thailand it could keep Andrew Zimmern busy for at least an entire season.
Here are a few things we’ve seen around here that we try to say, “No, thank you” to:
Frogs
Chicken Feet
Flat Duck
Processed Meat on a Stick
Giant Bugs
Ok, your turn. A team that visited Thailand this summer ate monkey poop soup in a village.
What’s the weirdest/grossest food you’ve ever eaten?

For me, it’s a toss up between the raw horse parts in Korea or the huge sago grub in Indonesia (the worst part was watching it squirm while it was being cooked…)

I was hoping the processed “meats” on a stick would make it onto your list! And flat duck… I deem them only worthy of photo-taking, not consuming. Who knows how long they’ve been in the case under that very hot light bulb. It could be eons…

I heard rumor of this monkey poop meal. Is this a documented fact? I have a hard time believing it…. living in a village myself . I can believe monkey intestines or brains… though I’m pretty sure eating monkey is illegal. Pig intestines or brain is much more likely (and yes I’ve had pig brains… too rich for me, it’s all fat!) But honestly, it sounds like some nationals trying to mess with a slightly naive team to me

It was the Canadian team early in the summer. I wasn’t there, so I can’t be the witness, but Ryan was… and Pastor John! Pastor John has been retelling the story as much as anyone else, I think! From my understanding, it was from inside the dead monkey, and just made up the broth that the pork was cooked in…

Hey Lori! I got the story. Strictly speaking, it was monkey intestines, but one of the guys on the team saw them prepare it, and he said that they squeezed the waste out of the intestines. When is waste considered poop? It hadn’t come out of them yet, but if you had given it a few more hours it would have. He said that it stank like poop too.

Ah-hahahahahaha!!! Chicken feet!!! That happened to my cousin when she was in Laos. She’d had a bad day, and all she wanted was her favorite Lao comfort meal which was sort of like American chicken noodle soup. When they brought her meal, it was a huge plate of chicken feet!!! Ew…..
April, did you eat your chicken feet?
I haven’t had that many gross food incidences. Had some interesting Korean food…like the side of little dried up sardines with the spicy red sauce on them. Good…but you could see their eyes…which is kinda creepy. And as for processed meats…I LOVE ODANG!!! That’s not a bad one, is it?

Nope. It was much earlier in our time here, and we didn’t know how to get much. We had eaten noodles there before, and we saw the lady in front of us order noodles with chicken on top… so we just pointed. We didn’t look closely to see what part of the chicken it was until it was sitting in front of us. I ate the noodles, but not the feet. I wasn’t in the mood for an adventure that day

I haven’t eaten insects, but everything else on the list I have eaten. Items that I have eaten that are not on the list are alligator, ostrich, rattlesnake and my favorite…buffalo steaks.

Thanks for clearing that up Michel-lyn. Now my mind is at ease! i knew it couldn’t actually be POOP! But still it doesn’t make the situation that much more appetizing… I remember watching my first pig slaughter and the whole process of squeezing out the intestines was SUPER gross…and like you said smelled awful too. But if you’ve ever eaten sausage you’ve eaten pig intestines, but we just rarely think about what was in those intestines before it was turned into sausage! Still anything “Monkey” has to top the list on exotic and unusual meals. I think my most interesting meal was porcuipine…it was really good. Tasted like bacon!

I’d like to think that I’m brave enough to try some of this stuff…but who am I kidding? I’d probably never be able to eat half of that.
