Food Friday: Jelled Coconut (Woon Maprao)

Woon maprao (literally jello coconut) is a tasty and refreshing treat that we had for the first time on Sunday. It’s jello made with coconut juice with pieces of young coconut served in the shell. If you’re a fan of coconut, you should try this out.

If you aren’t in a coconut growing climate, you probably won’t be able to make this, and that’s a shame too. If you wanna give it a go, it’s pretty straight forward.

Take out the water and meat from the inside. Add gelatin or agar agar and sugar to taste. Put the mixture back in the shell and into the fridge. Wait for it to gel. Enjoy!

What do you like to make with coconut?

Looks tasty!! Although, I’m not so sure how the idea of coconut jello sounds to me. Coconut pudding maybe, but I don’t know about jello.

Yeah Brad, I hear ya. If your only experience with coconut is the milk, and ripe, crunchy pieces, then it doesn’t seem like it would be good. But these are YOUNG coconuts… and the juice has a refreshing, subtle flavor. And the texture of young coconut is softer… not crunchy. I think if you tried it, you’d get on board!
