Sim City: Singapore

Sim City: Singapore

We were in Singapore this past week, and I’m just gonna say it: Singapore fascinates me. If you have never been to South East Asia, or studied the British Empire, then chances are the only thing you know about this little island nation is a story involving canes. But there’s SO much more.
(having trouble finding it on the map? It’s here.)

Imagine that someone takes the game Sim City, and says “Lets play this in real life with an ACTUAL city”. That’s Singapore. Everything is planned. Not quick plans mind you, but long-term, thought out plans. I’ll give one example.

In order to soothe investors and create a pleasant living environment, Singapore decided to become a “garden city”. In the 1960’s, the government brought together a group of botanists with the task of greening the city. They scour the globe, looking for plants that can thrive in the local environment. Taking their time, they plan. They don’t rush into it. And now almost 40 years later, Singapore has a 46.5% “green cover” with the added benefit of cooling the island!
Now, this “garden city” is well on the way to become a “city in a garden”. Being there – seeing the trees, the flowers, the shrubs, the ground covering… it makes you think it just might be possible!

What do you think?

Wow, this is so peaceful. I want to be there and just sit!!! (well, the beginning of the video anyways…) and I think baby bean likes the music, she wouldn’t stop moving when it started playing!!!
