Food Friday: First Thai Meal

If you saw the title of this post and thought, “Wow, that’s a catchy alliteration!” Well, you’re in luck, because this will be a regular Friday feature (OH! I just did it again). Every Friday will be a post about food, whether Thai, American, or whatever. ‘Cause if there’s one thing I love more than most things (but slightly less than God or my wifey) it’s food!

To start off with, here’s Natt explaining the foods we tried while sitting on the curb of a busy street (remember this post?)

Notes:

Grilled Chicken:
Tasted like… grilled chicken. To make it taste Thai, just dip it in the spicy sauce!

Tom Yum Goong:
When April asks her students, “What’s your favorite Thai food?” this is the one that comes up most often. It’s very flavorful and tasty. Try it out at your local Thai Restaurant (although you may want to order it “mai pet,” or “not spicy” if you’re… American).

Lap Khai:
Chicken and herb salad. The chicken is ground up very fine and mixed with various herbs.

Papaya Salad:
Another Thai favorite. Sounds like a dessert, but it’s more like a slaw… a spicy slaw.

    Great post J. Love the video of the foods.

    I would say I’m relatively wimpy compared to some of the more spicy cultures around the world but can handle my own here in the States I think. I like something with enough zing that it adds flavor but not so much that the only sensation you’re aware of is your mouth being on fire.

    Man, I haven’t ate yet. That all looked so yummy!

    Well, I am with Brad on this one. I love a hint of spice but nothing that is going to make my taste buds disappear for days! I would have to say I’m a “mild” girl on the spice chain.

    I watched this WAY too close to lunch time, now I’m STARVING!!!!! This video alone made me want to try Thai food. Any suggestions of a place here in FW to get good Thai food?
    As for the spice question…I’d like to think I like things spicy, but I like the spice to enhance the flavor, not BE the flavor. I hate to be repetitive, but yeah, I’m with Brad too.
    I’m off now to get food…

      Ok, to those of you who live in Fort Wayne, we know of two great Thai restaurants in town:
      The first one we tried, and the one we prefer for ambiance is Baan Thai (in the strip mall with JoAnn Fabrics). Jason loves the Pad Kee Mao there. Pad Thai is of course the most famous dish to get, and I also enjoy the pineapple rice (although it is a much less adventurous dish). I’d be curious to see how their Tom Yum Goong is if you want to try it for us and give us the full report :).
      The second restaurant (that I think is better priced, especially for lunch) is Switta Thai (next to Cracker Barrel). The food is just as tasty, but you just don’t get the roosters crowing in the background music. My favorite dish there is Pad Woon Sen.
      At both restaurants you can choose how spicy you want your dish by the number of stars. The menu explains. I will also warn you that every Thai soup I’ve tried has cilantro in it. So, if you like cilantro, go for it. But if you hate it, you might want to try another dish :).
      I will be interested to see if the food at those restaurants still measures up when we get back from Thailand! But for now, go check it out!

    Dang! I think you guys know I am NOT a fan of cilantro. ;) But I am curious to try the Tom Yum Goong….did you think the taste was overwhelming cilantro?

    Amy McCowen and I are going out for Thai sometime soon. She is a BIG fan of Pad Thai too! (Who knew?) So….if I’m feeling adventurous I will try the Tom Yum Goong if you say there isn’t a ton of cilantro.

    BTW - to address the actual question, my spice tolerance has gone up since finding Korean food. MMMMMM….kimchee!! :) Mashisoyo!

      No, there wasn’t a huge cilantro taste in that one. There were too many other flavors! Overall since we’ve been here I’ve been able to pick around the big cilantro pieces and I don’t notice the flavor that much :) .
      And, we’ve been promised that once the leaders here get back from their trip to the States that they will show us Korea Town so I can get my kimchi fix as well!!

    Kassie, the taste of cilantro permeates a lot of dishes. I don’t mind it, but it IS a major Thai ingredient.

    But it’s not used in pumpkin soup.

    As much as this may surprise April, I have turned into one who likes the spice! Maybe not 3 stars, but I’ll do 2 stars at the Thai restaurant here in town. It’s way too bland if you get it without upping the spice. :)

    Hm… now it makes me want to go have Thai for lunch…
